Ugh, what happened? Are Aluna Francis and George Reid even AlunaGeorge at this point? I Remember does feel like a group effort, but despite still being involved in album’s production, Reid doesn’t seem to be a part of this group anymore.
What I liked about Body Music, duo’s 2013’s debut, was the chemistry between them you could literally feel. The album was often unpredictable and with songs like garage-influenced Diver or sample-heavy Lost & Found they could take us to another place. I Remember however fails to do the same. Lyrically it feels impersonal and uninspired, musically more like an overview of the latest trends. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, though, the songs would have to be interesting in some aspect in the first place and here most of them are not.
It’s not a complete failure, but knowing their skills, it is a major disappointment. We still have a few semi-decent tracks here, like the lead single I’m In Control or In My Head, but that’s definitely not enough. Again, this is not a total disaster, maybe just a misstep. Hopefully next time, Aluna AND George.
